About

Upstream Aquatic Institute is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting the long-term health of freshwater ecosystems by supporting responsible fishing practices and reducing risks to native species.
We bring together science, education, and collaboration to address issues like aquatic invasive species, fish diseases, and the costly impacts of wasteful practices, especially those related to live bait use. Our goal is to help anglers, decision-makers, and the public make informed choices that protect the waters we all depend on.
Our work involves:
Conducting applied research on invasive species, aquatic diseases, and bait-related risks
Translating science into practical guidance for anglers, resource managers, and conservation groups
Building partnerships with stakeholders to support the future of fishing and aquatic health
Raising awareness of shared threats to fisheries, native biodiversity, and clean water
Through rigorous, independent research and inclusive outreach, we aim to ensure that fishing remains part of our natural heritage by keeping waters healthy, native fish populations strong, and resource use efficient for generations to come.
